Tip Calculator and the split
Enter the bill, the tip you want and how many people are paying. The tool rounds nothing without telling you, and it shows the per person figure both ways.
The Tip Calculator works out the tip, the total and each person’s share when a bill is split between any number of people. You can apply the tip to the subtotal before tax or to the total with tax, and the numbers update as you enter them.

What is customary
Tipping is local. The same 15% is generous in one country and an insult in another, and in some places it is already included in the price.
| Place | Usual tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 18–20% | Expected for table service; tax is not a tip base |
| Canada | 15–20% | Higher in cities, on the pre-tax amount |
| United Kingdom | 10–12.5% | Often already added as a service charge |
| Germany, Netherlands | 5–10% | Round up the bill or leave a euro or two |
| France, Italy, Spain | 0–5% | Service is included by law |
| Japan | None | Tipping can be refused or embarrassing |
| Taxis, salons, delivery | 10% | Small notes are easier than change |

Tipping Without the Awkward Pause
The tip is a social calculation more than an arithmetic one. Two rules cover most situations: know the local norm before you sit down, and decide the number before the card machine appears.
Work out the tip from the tax
If sales tax in your area is around 8%, doubling the tax line gives roughly 16% — a fast, honest estimate you can do while the plate is cleared.
Cards have made it easier and louder
Terminals now suggest 20, 25 and 30%. Those defaults are set by software, not custom. Choosing the middle option because it is easiest is a decision; make it deliberately.
Who gets the money
In many restaurants tips are pooled and shared with kitchen staff, in others the server keeps them, and in a few the house takes a cut. If that matters to you, ask — the answer is usually honest.
When you do not tip
Genuinely bad service, or a country where tipping is not part of the culture. Both are fine; the point is that leaving nothing should be as quick a decision as leaving 20%. And when a bill arrives with a discount applied, the discount calculator helps check the new total before the tip.

fact_checkQuick facts
- A tip is a percentage of the bill before or after tax, which is why the same percentage gives two different totals.
- Splitting a bill evenly is not the same as splitting it fairly when people ordered very different dishes.
- The SI defines the kilo as exactly 1000 and the centi as exactly one hundredth, which is why conversions are exact, not approximate.menu_bookBIPM
- Since 2019 the kilogram is defined by a fixed value of the Planck constant, not by a metal cylinder in Paris.menu_bookBIPM
