Page ranges, extracted locally

Take out the pages you actually need

Send page 4 of a 90 page report, keep the signed page, or split a scan into single pages. Type the pages, get a new PDF - the original file is never touched.

Short answerLast edited October 31, 2026

The PDF Splitter breaks a PDF into separate files, one per page or one per page range you name. It works on your device, so the document stays private, and you can download the parts one by one or as a set.

Splitting is a copy, not a cut

A splitter reads the page list you give it and writes a new document containing exactly those pages, in the order you typed them. The source file stays where it is, complete. That is why the tool can be used twice in a row with different ranges without any risk.

Two behaviours are worth knowing. First, pages are copied as objects, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution - the extracted file is not a screenshot of the pages. Second, a smaller page count does not automatically mean a much smaller file: embedded fonts and images shared by the whole document are copied with each extracted page. If you need the size down as well, run the result through the PDF compressor.

Naming is part of the job when you split a long document. A file called page-04.pdf means nothing three weeks later; invoice-2026-04.pdf does. In the one-file-per-page mode the tool numbers the files in the original order, which is exactly what a bulk upload needs - rename the ZIP contents in one pass on your computer before sending them, not one by one in a browser.

One page, a range, or several groups
You typeYou get
7page 7 only
1-3pages 1, 2, 3
1-3, 8pages 1, 2, 3, 8
12-12page 12 only
5, 2, 9pages 5, 2, 9 - in that order
20-99 on a 10 page filean error: those pages do not exist

From a 90 page file to one page

1

Drop the PDF

The page count is read locally, so a range you type is checked against the real document.

2

Type the pages

Single pages, ranges, or both: 1-3, 8, 12. The order you type is the order in the result.

3

Take the file

One PDF for a range, a ZIP with one file per page when you choose that mode.

Checks that save a second upload
  • Count the pages in the result against the range you typed
  • If a signature must stay valid, extract the whole signed page, not part of it
  • Keep the original: some portals ask for the complete file later
  • If the result is still too heavy, compress it after splitting
  • For a two-sided scan, remember that every sheet is two pages

Ranges, limits and mistakes

Can I extract pages in a different order than the original?
Yes. The pages are copied in the order you type them, so "5, 2, 9" produces a three page file starting with the original page 5. This is useful for putting a summary page in front of an appendix without editing the source.
What happens if I type a page that does not exist?
The tool stops and tells you, instead of silently returning fewer pages. Check the page count first - the number is read from the file itself, so a range like 20-99 on a 10 page document is caught before anything is written.
Does splitting remove the password or the restrictions?
No. A protected file cannot be read at all, and a file with restrictions keeps them: splitting is not a way around permissions. Remove protection in your reader only if you own the document.
Why is the extracted page as large as the whole file?
Because the resources it uses are copied with it - fonts, images, colour profiles. A single page of a photo-heavy brochure can carry most of the file. Compress the extracted page if it has to be small.
Can I split a PDF into two halves?
Yes, in two runs: first type the first half as a range, download it, then type the second half. There is no dedicated "split in two" button because the page count is rarely even, and a range that you can read is easier to check than a guessed midpoint.
Can I split a PDF on my phone?
Yes, the work happens in the browser tab. Very large files are limited by the phone's memory rather than by the tool, so a 300 page scan is better split on a computer.

Send the page, not the whole file

Type the numbers, take the PDF, keep the original untouched.

Quick facts

  1. Splitting does not compress anything: the parts together are about as large as the original file.
  2. A range such as 1-5 or 8, 12-14 takes pages out of order and builds a new document from exactly those pages.
  3. A PDF describes every element by its position on the page, which is why it looks identical everywhere and why its text does not reflow.Adobe
  4. PDF 2.0 permits AES-256 encryption for the password that protects a document, while older files may use 40-bit RC4.Adobe
  5. WebAssembly became a W3C Recommendation in 2019 and lets a page run a full encoder such as FFmpeg without a plugin.W3C

Questions people ask

How do I split a PDF into single pages?
Choose the option for one file per page, run the split and download the result. Each page becomes its own PDF with the same size and content as the page in the original.
How do I extract only some pages from a PDF?
Enter the page numbers or ranges you want, such as 2-5 or 1, 7, 9-10, and export them as one new file. The pages are taken from the original and keep their order as you entered it.
Does splitting a PDF lower its quality?
No. Splitting copies the existing pages without re-encoding the images or the text, so each part looks identical to the same pages in the original file.
