Lossless or Lossy? A Short Guide to Audio Formats
Audio formats fall into two families. Lossless formats such as WAV and FLAC keep the sound exactly as recorded. Lossy formats such as MP3, AAC (M4A), OGG and OPUS throw away parts of the signal that people rarely notice, which makes the file many times smaller.
When to keep it lossless
If you will edit, mix or master the audio later, stay with WAV or FLAC. Each time a lossy file is decoded and saved again, a little more quality is lost, so it pays to keep a lossless master.
When small files matter
For sharing, uploading or listening on the go, a lossy format is the practical choice. MP3 plays on every device. M4A is the native choice on iPhones. OPUS gives the best quality for the size, especially for voices.
