How Target-Size Video Compression Works
A video’s size comes from two things: how many bits are spent per second (the bitrate) and how many seconds it lasts. To reduce video size to an exact target, the tool calculates the bitrate that fits, sets a little aside for sound, and encodes the picture with the rest.
Resolution follows the budget
A 20 second clip can stay in Full HD under 10 MB. A 5 minute clip cannot, so automatic mode lowers the resolution to keep the picture clean rather than blocky.
Tips
- Trim unneeded parts first with the GIF Maker & Video Cutter; shorter videos look better at the same size.
- Turn off sound for silent clips.
- Check a file’s current bitrate and resolution with the Video Metadata Viewer.
