CPM Calculator the price of attention
What a thousand impressions cost you, what your budget buys at a target price, and how far off the target the campaign actually landed.
The CPM Calculator works out the cost per thousand impressions from your spend and impressions, or the number of impressions a budget buys at a target CPM. For $50 spent on 20,000 impressions the CPM is $2.50. Comparing CPM across channels shows which one delivers reach for less money, before clicks or sales are counted.
Three prices for the same click
What a thousand impressions cost. Buys the chance to be seen, says nothing about what happens next.
What a click costs. Buys a visit, which is where intent starts to appear in the numbers.
What a customer costs. The only one of the three that answers whether the campaign paid.
Typical ranges by channel
| Channel | CPM range | What sets the price |
|---|---|---|
| Social feed | $4 – $12 | Audience targeting and season |
| Display network | $1 – $4 | Inventory quality and viewability |
| Search | $15 – $60 | Commercial intent of the keyword |
| Streaming video | $18 – $45 | Completion rate and brand safety |
| Newsletter | $20 – $80 | A named, opted-in audience |
Fix the spend
Use the invoiced amount, not the daily budget times days: platform credits and fees are part of the real cost.
Use served impressions
Take the number from the delivery report, not from an estimate. Two platforms rarely count impressions the same way.
Compare with the target
The gap against your planned CPM tells you whether the auction moved or the targeting did.
A cheap CPM in front of the wrong audience is the most expensive thing in advertising.

CPM Is a Price, Not a Result
Cost per mille is the oldest unit in advertising: the price of showing something a thousand times. It survives because it is the only unit that lets you compare wildly different campaigns — a sponsored newsletter, a social video and a banner on a news site all reduce to a number per thousand impressions. What it does not survive is being read as a measure of success. A low CPM only means the attention was cheap; whether that attention was worth anything is a different calculation entirely.
What the auction is actually selling
Impressions are sold by auction, and the auction clears at the price the last winning bid set. That price moves with demand for the exact audience at the exact moment: the same slot costs more on a weekday evening than at three in the morning, more in December than in February, more for a person who has recently searched for the product than for a random visitor. A CPM that jumps from five dollars to eleven between two months is usually not a mistake in your settings; it is the market telling you that somebody else wanted those people too.
This is why a CPM target is a planning assumption rather than a promise. You can enter the auction with a target in mind, and the platform will try to find impressions at that price, but it will also quietly narrow the audience to do it. The delivery report will show a beautiful CPM and a reach figure that never left the same small pool of people.
Reach, frequency and the arithmetic of attention
Divide the budget by the CPM and you get thousands of impressions. Divide that by frequency and you get people. Those are three different numbers, and campaigns are usually sold on the first and judged on the third. A budget of twelve hundred dollars at a five-dollar CPM buys 240,000 impressions, which is 240,000 people once, or 48,000 people five times, or 24,000 people ten times. Only one of those is a campaign; the others are a very expensive way to annoy a small group.
A healthy brand campaign sits around three to five impressions per person over a few weeks. A direct-response campaign can live with one, because the click is the point. Knowing which one you are running decides whether a low CPM is good news or a warning.
Viewability, or the impressions nobody saw
An impression is counted when the slot loads. On a long page, that can happen entirely below the fold, and nobody scrolls. Industry measurement puts viewability somewhere between forty and seventy per cent depending on the format, which means the effective cost of an impression somebody could actually see is roughly double the quoted CPM. If a placement offers a suspiciously cheap rate, check the viewability figure before booking it: the discount is often the measurement.
How to use the number well
Use CPM to plan reach, not to judge results. Set the target from what the same placement cost last month, then compare three things after the campaign: the CPM you paid, the frequency you reached, and the conversion rate of the traffic that arrived. A campaign with a CPM twenty per cent above target and a conversion rate twice as high is a better campaign, and the report will not say so unless you look.
Finally, keep the currency and the tax treatment consistent. Invoices include or exclude VAT depending on where you are, and a CPM calculated from a net figure compared with one calculated from a gross figure will look like a fifteen per cent performance swing that never happened. Enter the number you would actually pay, and compare it only with numbers calculated the same way.

- CPM is spend divided by impressions, multiplied by a thousand: $50 for 20,000 impressions is a $2.50 CPM.
- CPM prices impressions, not people: the same viewer counted twice is two impressions.
- CPC is what an advertiser pays for one click, and the two are linked by the click-through rate of the ad.menu_bookGoogle Ads Help
