Hashtag Calculator is it worth using
Four numbers from the hashtag page and one from your own post. The score tells you whether the tag is a doorway or a queue.
The Hashtag Performance Calculator judges whether a hashtag is worth using, from the impressions of your post, the reach the tag brought, how many posts use it and the engagement it produced. It shows the reach per post, which tells a niche tag that delivers from a crowded one that drowns.
How it works
Enter the tag data
Add the posts and the views the hashtag gets.
Add your own reach
Add your follower count so the comparison is fair.
Read the score

Three parts of the score
Reach share
Your impressions as a share of the tag total. Under a tenth of a per cent, the tag is not carrying you anywhere.
Engagement
Interactions divided by impressions on your post. A tag that brings the wrong people lowers this even when it raises reach.
Room left
Posts competing for the same feed. A million posts means your entry is invisible within a minute.
Sizes of hashtag
| Size | Posts | What it does for you |
|---|---|---|
| Niche | Under 20k | Your post can hold the top spot for hours |
| Mid | 20k – 200k | A good balance of visibility and volume |
| Large | 200k – 1M | A few minutes of exposure, mostly to strangers |
| Massive | Over 1M | Effectively invisible without a viral post |
How the score is builtexpand_more
Reach share and engagement are worth 40 and 35 points, room left is worth 25. Each part is capped, so a huge reach cannot compensate for a tag that buries you, and a tiny engagement cannot be rescued by an empty room.
Why the same score can mean two thingsexpand_more
A score of 62 from a niche tag with high engagement is a keeper. The same 62 from a broad tag with weak engagement is a tag to drop at the next test. Read the parts, not only the total.
Where the numbers come fromexpand_more
Every hashtag page shows a total post count; some show total views. Your own impressions and interactions come from the post insights. Nothing here is estimated by us.
Banned and spammy tagsexpand_more
Tags used by bots are sometimes hidden from search to stop spam. A tag with a huge count and no recent posts in its feed is a sign to leave it alone, whatever the arithmetic says.

Hashtags Are Rooms, Not Keys
The metaphor people carry around is that a hashtag unlocks an audience. It does not. A hashtag is a room: a place where posts on a subject collect, ranked by whatever the platform decides matters that week. Walking into a room with two hundred people and saying something interesting works. Walking into a stadium and shouting does not, no matter how good the sentence is. Everything about hashtag performance follows from that difference in size.
Reach is a total, not a door
When a hashtag page reports two and a half million posts, that number describes the room, not the chance of being seen in it. A post entering a room that size competes with everything posted in the last hour and is ranked against accounts with years of history. The same post in a room of fifteen thousand can sit near the top for a day. On paper the big tag has more people; in practice the small tag has more of the people who will actually look.
This is why the calculator asks for your impressions as well as the tag's reach. The share you take is the only honest measure of whether the room let you in. One per cent of a two-million reach is twenty thousand impressions, which is a good day; one per cent of a mass tag is nothing, which is why the room-left figure carries a quarter of the score on its own.
Engagement is the quality control
A tag can raise reach and lower engagement at the same time, and that trade is usually a loss. Broad tags bring people who are scrolling a subject, not following you; they look, they do not save, and the platform reads their indifference as a signal about the post. Niche tags bring fewer people who are more likely to care, and the saves and comments they produce are worth more than the extra views. When a post underperforms its usual engagement, one of the first things to check is whether the hashtag block changed.
How to run a two-week test
Pick two hashtag sets, keep the rest of your posting identical, and alternate. Score each set after a week with the same arithmetic. The set with the higher score is not automatically the winner: look at saves, profile visits and follows, because those are the outcomes the reach was supposed to produce. Two weeks is enough to see a pattern and short enough that the platform has not changed its mind about everything.
What hashtags cannot do
They cannot fix a weak first second, they cannot make an uninteresting offer interesting, and they cannot replace a recommendation system that decides most of your distribution. Treat them as one input among several: a modest, cheap, sometimes useful way to be found by people who were already looking. Scored honestly and tested in pairs, they stop being folklore and become a small, measurable part of the routine.

fact_checkQuick facts
- Reach per post is the number that matters: a tag with a million posts can deliver fewer views than a niche one with ten thousand.
- Engagement from a tag is measured against the impressions it brought, not against the total reach of the post.
- YouTube defines impressions as the times a thumbnail was shown, and the click-through rate as the share of those that became views.menu_bookYouTube Help
- A thumbnail is displayed at 1280 × 720 in the player, and the same picture is cropped to a narrow strip on a phone home feed.menu_bookYouTube Help
