RPM Calculator earnings per thousand
Ad revenue, memberships and sponsorships all reduce to the same question: what does a thousand views bring in? Enter the money and the views, and the answer is the number you can plan with.
The RPM Calculator works out revenue per thousand views from total revenue and views, and compares it with sessions when you have them. For 500 dollars from 100,000 views the RPM is 5 dollars. Because the figure is per thousand views, it lets you compare a small video with a large one on the same footing.

RPM, CPM and the difference
What an advertiser pays for a thousand monetised impressions. On a page where half the views carry no advert at all, CPM can be healthy while the channel earns very little.
Use CPM to judge the advertising market and to compare placements.
What the creator receives for a thousand total views, adverts or not. It is the honest number: it already includes the views that pay nothing.
Use RPM to judge the business, because it is the one that ends up on the invoice.
What a thousand sessions earn. A visitor who reads four pages is one session and four page views, so session RPM is almost always the higher figure.
Use it when ad density per visitor matters more than the raw traffic count.
What pushes RPM up and down
| Lever | Effect | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Audience country | 3–10× | Advertiser demand differs enormously by market |
| Topic | 2–5× | Finance and software pay more than memes |
| Session depth | 20–60% | More pages per visit, more slots served |
| Device | 1.5–2× | Desktop sessions carry more adverts |
| Season | 15–40% | The fourth quarter is expensive for advertisers |
| Watch time | 10–30% | Completion rate decides how many ad breaks play |

RPM: The Number That Survives a Bad Month
Revenue per mille is the least glamorous number in publishing and the only one that keeps its meaning when everything else moves. Views swing with the algorithm, engagement swings with the topic, ad rates swing with the season, but the earnings per thousand views stay in a recognisable band for a given audience. That stability is exactly what makes it useful: it converts a traffic figure into money and back again.
Why total views, not monetised impressions
Advertisers buy impressions; creators are paid on views. Between those two lie the views that were never monetised: readers with an ad blocker, videos watched but not far enough for a break to play, pages served to a country with no advertiser demand, sessions cut short before the second slot. The difference is not small. It is common for a site to sell impressions on twenty per cent of its page views and for a channel to run adverts on half of its watch time. RPM absorbs all of it into one number, which is why it is always lower than CPM and why it is never a mistake to see them differ.
The country mix dominates everything
Two hundred thousand views from an audience split evenly across high-demand markets and everywhere else behaves nothing like two hundred thousand views from a single well-paid country. Advertiser budgets per person vary by a factor of five to ten, and no amount of on-page optimisation bridges that gap. When RPM falls after a video travels, it is usually not a penalty; it is geography. Look at the country breakdown before you touch the layout.
Session depth is the lever you control
Page RPM rises when a visitor reads more than one page, because more slots are served for the same acquisition cost. Three internal links placed where the reader is already interested, a related section with a real reason to click, and a next-step box at the end are worth more than another advert in the sidebar. The same logic applies to watch time: the channels that earn best are not the ones with the most adverts, they are the ones people finish.
Planning with the number
Take a steady month, total the revenue from every source — adverts, memberships, sponsorships, affiliate commissions — and divide by the views. That single figure answers the questions founders actually ask. How many views cover the hosting? How much traffic does the mortgage need? Is a sponsorship at two thousand dollars for a guaranteed hundred thousand views better or worse than the platform rate on the same traffic? Without RPM, each question becomes an argument. With it, each becomes a division.
The last habit worth keeping is to recalculate it every month and to look at the trend rather than the level. An RPM sliding from four dollars to three over a quarter is a signal that the audience mix has changed, even when the traffic chart looks cheerful — and the traffic chart will never tell you that. Revenue per thousand views is where growth and income are reconciled, which is why it deserves a place on the first screen of whatever dashboard you keep.

fact_checkQuick facts
- RPM is revenue per thousand views, while CPM is the price per thousand ad impressions; RPM is usually lower, because not every view shows an ad and the platform keeps a share.
- Videos over about eight minutes can carry mid-roll ads on YouTube, which is one reason longer videos can earn more per view.
- CPM is the price for a thousand impressions, so revenue from a campaign is impressions divided by a thousand, multiplied by the CPM.menu_bookGoogle Ads Help
- CPC is what an advertiser pays for one click, and the two are linked by the click-through rate of the ad.menu_bookGoogle Ads Help
- YouTube defines impressions as the times a thumbnail was shown, and the click-through rate as the share of those that became views.menu_bookYouTube Help
